Rick Bull, aka Deepchild, has been steadily carving out a name for himself in the worldwide electronic music community over the past few years. His bass soaked, sultry tech house sound has led to outings on labels like Get Physical and Freerange, remix work for New Order and a very healthy international touring schedule. It is easy to see why with his latest release for the excellent Trapez, which is the work of somebody at the top of their game.

Backroom, the title track of the ep, underlines what the Deepchild sound is all about. An almost apocalyptic sounding array of intricate and superbly produced layers of growling squidgy bass give the song a seductuve yet sleazy feel. This is complemented and intensified by the dark, brooding vocals documenting another misspent night of excess in the club, as the song says, free from regret. In fact it is hard to find anything to dislike about this song, a (very) late contender for one of the year’s top releases.

Death Panel My Ass Ms Palin (DPMAMP), the b side, has a slightly less intense, housier feel, although still keeping with the deep dub sensibilities that infuse the title track. It is built around a firm bass and Chicago style vocal samples that are elaborately layered throughout. The whole song has an array of subtle fills that help create mood and ensure that there is always a lot happening, whilst at the same time never sounding too busy. Superb.

Digital bonus track Come a Little Closer, is further along the deep house route still. Another chugging number built around vocal snippets, again it is excellently engineered. While most producers would struggle to put something together this good, it is left slightly in the shade by the first two tracks.

Deepchild and Trapez have proved with this EP why they are the real deal. The weakest track of the three is still head and shoulders above the moribund, deep house elevator music being churned out all over the place at the minute. Second track DPMAMP is a masterclass in production techniques, with intricate fills left right and centre and a very intuitive use of samples and layers of sound. The title track you need to own. Full stop. Very Highly Recommended.
